Synopsis: Alex St George is about to be sent to fight in the First World War. Before he leaves, he meets and marries Kitty, whose mother owns a tobacconists shop. He writes to his mother to tell her about the marriage and she tries to bribe Kitty to leave him alone. When this fails, she spies on her and, seeing her spending time with a friend of Alex, writes to tell him that she is being unfaithful. Alex reads the letter just as he's about to go on a flying mission and his plane crashes, the letter crushed in his hand. Kitty is sent the letter and accuses his mother of causing the crash. Alex comes back to his mother's house paralysed and she keeps him a virtual prisoner until he manages to get a letter to Kitty and she kidnaps hiim and takes him to their house by the river Thames. There she looks after him and he eventually regains the use of his legs.
